Flowers in "Love Happens"

Jennifer Aniston's new movie "Love Happens" opens today and if you're anything like us you'll be drooling over the gorgeous arrangments made in her character's flower shop, Eloise's Garden.

In the movie, Eloise appears to create this design (below) as the camera moves in 360 degrees around her design bench. In reality, she had some expert help to make sure the completed design turned out to be a smashing composition.

The finished bouquet contains some of the most premium flowers you can buy. The design contained some of the most premium flowers you can have in a flower shop – lilies, hydrangea, viburnum, ornithogalum, purple phalenopsis orchids, gentiana, eucalyptus and ivy. The container was a natural wood stump hollowed out to create a vessel. The approximate value of the bouquet was $500-$750. It was especially elaborate to show the artistry of designing flowers. The magic of flowers is going from individual items to a beautiful composition.

There's also a scene in the movie in which Aniston's character, Eloise, creates an arrangement while jamming on her iPod. The scene will end up being about 15 to 20 seconds, but it took about seven hours to film.

Great customer email

Thanks David! This email made our day!

Subject: Thank You!
Date: Thu, 16 Jul 2009 15:09:47 EDT
To: info@knoxvilleflowerpot.com

I ordered a $75 vase of fresh flowers for my mother who is a patient @ Univ Tenn Medical Center on Tuesday afternoon and explained that I wanted them delivered that day if at all possible.

You definitely went above and beyond, the call of duty!

My mother was so pleased to get a nice arrangement of such bountiful variety of colorful, fresh and fragrant flowers. I called 4 local Knoxville florists and everyone explained that same day delivery is not available and the earliest they could deliver to UT was later the next day.

I called the Flower Pot and the order taker was so nice and accommodating and willing to have the driver make another trip to UT to ensure my mom got her flowers the same day.

I will be sure to use your shop in the future for all my florist needs and will tell other family and friends likewise of what a pleasure doing business with your shop is!

Keep up the good work.

Best regards,

David

A Very Flower Pot St. Patty's Day

We didn't have the blog on St. Patrick's day, but what we did have was fun! I thought I'd share our photos. Better late then never!

Always willing to pull a publicity stunt we decided we would ask local entrepeneur, Gregg White (former owner of Nama and La Costa restaurants) to walk the streets of Knoxville as a flower delivery leprochaun. It turned out that most of the publicity was awarded to Gregg but it was a great time and we did at least get our name mentioned in this article: http://www.metropulse.com/news/2009/mar/18/what-now-gregg-white/

Gregg attracts attention from the ladies as he delivers flowers to the offices at 21st Mortgage.

5 Tips for Longer Lasting Flowers

Last night the Flower Pot gang attended a care and handling seminar. We learned so much we thought we'd we would pass along some great tips that you can use at home to make your flowers last longer.

1) Disinfect the vase or container that holds your flowers with household disinfectant or bleach. If you bought the flowers already arranged at The Flower Pot then your vase has already been disinfected, although you may want to do this process several days after you bring your flowers home.

2) Refresh the water in your vase or container every other day. We learned last night, "If you wouldn't drink it, neither will your flowers." Bacteria can grow among the stems dirty water so its important to give your flowers a a fresh drink. Some homemade remedies for keeping water purer and staving off bacteria growth include placing a copper penny, tablet of aspirin, vinegar, lemon, or vodka in the vase.

3) Re-cut the stems of the flowers. A few days after being cut, the bottom inch or so of a stem will dry up and die, even in water. If the tip of the stem is dead then water can't get to the part of the stem that is still living so its important to cut off the dead and make room for the living. If you cut the stem at an angle it provides more surface area for the stem to soak up water.

4) If you are arranging the flowers yourself be sure that your vase is not over-crowded. Flowers do better and are happier when they have a little breathing room~ just like us!

5) Feed your flowers. An easy way to do this without flower food is to place a sugar cube or 1 tsp. sugar in your water. In nature, a plant uses photosynthesis to convert sunlight into energy so you are simulating that process by providing the flower with the necessary nutrients and energy to live longer.

Our Favorite Wedding Flower Trends

In honor of the end of June and wedding season I thought I'd share some of our favorite wedding flower ideas from this year.

The Floral Monogram~
Monograms have been a wedding staple for many years now. They're classic and elegant. One of our favorite trends, and favorite things to make is a monogram out of flowers. By either working your monogram into flowers or building a monogram out of flowers you create a design that is elegant, fun, and unique. Its a great option to place on church doors, hang in nature, or a liven up blank wall in your space.

Wheatgrass~

We love this for its simplicity and organic qualities. Its also really fun to use! Wheatgrass is easy to work with, cost effective, and can give you an awesome "living" centerpeice. Its great for outdoor spring and summer weddings or for brides who want to bring the outside in!

Curly Willow~

If you want tall arrangments for your table centerpieces or space decoration you can't beat curly willow. Its tall wooden branches are whimsical and fun. You can also hang votives, small paper lanterns or create a place card tree from the branches!
